Hallo! It's Thursday, and while I *could* put up the Facebook made friends video (which I may still do, but tomorrow!), I need to do my duty and post up another cover for Tune-Up Thursdays!!!
I've recently made a trip to Toronto to audition for some Broadway level Disney productions. And it seems that visiting Toronto to audition for Broadway shows is becoming a regular thing. There is one place that I have fallen in love with when I went to T.O. last year for the Allegiance auditions: Statlers.
Statlers is a bar in the village that hosts a few open mic nights a week, but the one that got me hooked is their Musical Theatre open mic nights on Mondays, hosted by Jennifer Walls, and accompanied by Donavon on keys, and Jamie Bird on cajon. I showed up there alone my first time, (because Kathleen was too tired to come out after promising she would...lol), and got to sing and ended up meeting a new group of friends in Toronto. Friends, I said to myself, that I would love to collaborate with.
I actually meant to do an equity co-op production with, but this is the next best thing.
Everybody knows I love song cycles, because it's got some of the best in contemporary musical theatre. One of my favourites is Edges by Pasek & Paul. It's on my list of "shows I would love to perform", and this song, Coasting, has been on my list of "songs I would love to collaborate with people on". List number 2 is getting shorter!
When I made my most recent trip to Toronto almost a month ago, I managed to get my friend Chris Tsujiuchi to play piano, and my friends Maren & Sarah to join me on this venture. I'm very glad that they were on board, and picked up the music fast enough for us to spend a few hours laughing and singing and having fun recording music. (I think Sarah even has videos of Maren trying to get the ending of the song...after we'd been recording her part for a few hours, and me needing to rush off to the airport to head home afterwards!).
It was a fun time, and I can't wait to do it again!
So please, enjoy "Coasting" from Edges: A Song Cycle by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul. (performed by Chris Tsujiuchi on Piano, Maren Sigson as Woman 1, Sarah Strange as Woman 2, and myself as Man 2)
