Happy first Thursday of the month, and the first #TuneUpThursdays of April!!!
Gonna start off the month with an oldie, but a goodie! As most of you know, I've been singing with the Bach family of choirs for the past 26 years. I started when I was eight years old, when my elementary school teach Ms. Dyck (who was singing in the adult choir at the time) recommended me to the choir, and that apparently, was all I needed to get started on my love for choral music.
I've meet some of my closest friends through the Bach Choirs: My best friend Richard, my friends Sarah & Chris, my friend Stephen, all the rest of Sarabande really. It's also been a family affair for the Laus. My brothers Anders and Alvin are both members of the choir as well, only missing a year each when they were studying away from Vancouver. (Alvin in France, and Anders in Kelowna.)
In a previous post, you'd briefly heard about Sine Nomine, the chamber men's group that Bruce Pullan started within the Bach Family. Sine Nomine ended up being kind of a young men's choral social club. Bruce would tell us stories about his college days in England, singing for drinks. My eyes and ears were opened up to a whole new genre of music that I don't think I would've discovered otherwise: Spirituals.
I pulled out this piece of sheet music when I was spring cleaning and decided to start scanning all of my choral music as a digital backup. It was one of our favourites back in 1998, and as I was recording this piece track by track, part by part, I was reminded of why we loved this piece so much.
I present to you Naylor's "Peter, Go Ring Dem Bells", performed in the style of Sine Nomine.
Enjoy!
And as always, if you like what you hear, please share with your friends and family.
Side note: I love to collaborate!!! If you'd like to record a Tune-Up Thursdays track with me, just drop me a line at
Aerhyn.Lau@gmail.com and we'll work on something together to record! Or if you have an acapella arrangement of a song you've been working on, please share it with me and I'll do a recording of it! Or, if you have a song request, message me and I'll try my best to make it happen!
Join me tomorrow for your regularly scheduled #TuneUpThursdays programming with the letter "F".
