Hello Tune-Up Thursdays listeners!
One thing I love about #TuneUpThursdays being on a Thursday is that I can play around with the #TBT -ness of Thursdays as well.
This week's track has a little bit of a #ThrowbackThursday spin on it, as well as a little bit of a newer spin.
I've known the Emmotts (Leah & Kristina) for a long time now, mostly because they went to school with my two younger brothers. Both are musicians in their own right; Leah, now a yoga-wear designer, used to not only play drums for the Moscrop Secondary jazz band, but also for Bif Naked's protegé group "Live on Release". Kristina is a folk-y singer/songwriter.
A few years ago...it may already be five years...Kristina and I were talking about getting together and doing some acoustic covers together. We set up a time, and talked about possible repertoire. The day comes, and it turns out that Kristina had to work at the pool. She then introduces me to her über talented boyfriend James, saying that he's just a phenom on the guitar. And she was right!
James and I got settled in and recorded three covers that day. Here is one of them.
The song itself is one of my personal favourites. Mainly because singing it allows me to flip into my falsetto, which is something I love to do. The John Mayer cover of this song made me love it even more. And one day, while listening to it while running on the treadmill at the gym, I decided to change up all the American references and make it a Canadian piece.
I present to you "Free Fallin' ", originally by Tom Petty, but I'm covering the John Mayer version. Featuring James Testani on acoustic guitar, and my Canadian lyric changes. Enjoy!
And as always, if you like what you hear, please share with your friends and family. Those who may want to collaborate, or if you have any requests, feel free to message me at
